What SMS delivery reports actually tell you (and what they don't)

When a bulk SMS campaign finishes sending, the first instinct is to look at the delivery rate and treat it as a success metric. It's useful, but it answers a narrower question than most people assume.

What "delivered" means

A delivery report confirms the message reached the recipient's handset and was accepted by the device — not that it was opened, read, or acted on. For a mobile network, that's the end of its responsibility, and it's genuinely the most reliable signal available without asking the recipient directly.

Reading the report properly

On Adcoar Reach, a campaign's report breaks down into delivered, failed, and pending states, plus network-level failure reasons where the carrier provides them (invalid number, handset off, mailbox full, and so on). The useful read isn't just the headline delivery percentage — it's whether failures cluster around a particular network, region, or number format, which usually points to a fixable data-quality issue in your contact list rather than a platform problem.

The honest limitation

No SMS platform — ours included — can tell you a message was read. If that matters for your use case (a payment reminder, an appointment confirmation), pairing SMS with a WhatsApp Business message, which does support read receipts, closes that gap.
